The University has developed a new Supplemental Student Charter in response to the Covid-19 pandemic that all students are required to agree to as part of the online enrolment process. The Supplemental Student Charter is intended to respect the personal safety of students, staff and the wider community by ensuring that we all help to keep the University a safe place to study and work.

Students are expected to follow Welsh Government and Swansea University  requirements around health and safety and social distancing on campus, in Halls of Residence and in the wider community. Any breach of the expectations in the Student Charter could result in disciplinary action. (more…)

The Engineering department was crucial to the University College of Swansea in its earliest years. The need to train more scientists and engineers to boost the local economy was one of the driving reasons for establishing the College in the first place, hence Metallurgy being a particularly important subject.

This photo shows some staff and students from Engineering in the early1930s. By this point, the department had not yet been formally divided into the specific disciplines of Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Industrial Engineering. It was located in one of the temporary ‘huts’ in the grounds of the park – shown in this picture – although the Engineering building had to be made of more robust materials because of all the heavy machinery that was placed into the department for practical work. It is important to note how all the people pictured are men. Engineering was seen as a specifically male subject in this period. It is also interesting to note how formally students dressed to come in and study at University, even when they were doing practical work. One or two, however, have dispensed with their ties!

In preparation for their return, TV Licensing is encouraging young people who are substituting sticky dancefloors for toppling showstoppers — such as Normal People and the UEFA Nations League — to make sure they are correctly licensed. (more…)
