Collage of newspaper cuttings showing key moments and public figures in Black History We are excited to be celebrating Black History Month which is between the 1st – 31st October. It is very important to us as a University to recognise both the talent and creativity of Black staff and students, but also to raise the challenges around race equality that all Universities are facing, and to make this a part of our wider University conversation.

What is Black History Month?

‘The first Black History Month celebration in the UK was in 1987. People from African and Caribbean backgrounds have been a fundamental part of British history for centuries. However, campaigners believe their value and contribution to society is often overlooked, ignored or distorted. Black History Month gives everyone the opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of Black heritage and culture. More recently, greater attention has been paid to the importance of the Windrush generation and the Black Lives Matter movement, especially since the death of George Floyd in May 2020.’ BBC News.

The Students’ Union and University Faculties will be hosting a range of events over the month to focus on different contributions, challenges and stories of those from African and Caribbean descent. You can keep up to date with the activities on Swansea Students’ Union Events and Events at Swansea University.  Events will be available to book online each week.

There will be weekly updates of events shared on both University and Students’ Union social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

The events are open to all staff and students of different ethnicities and nationalities, and from across the whole University.

I would like to extend my thanks to all those, from across the University, who helped us to organise Black History Month events this year. We are committed to progressing race equality and would encourage you all to attend these events.

The University is about learning and this is a great opportunity to learn beyond the usual portals.
