INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXAMINATION CANDIDATES

Extenuating circumstances

Extenuating circumstances are defined as “serious and acute problems or events which are beyond a student’s control or ability to foresee which may have affected a student’s performance and/or may have impeded a student’s ability to attend, complete, or submit an assessment on time”.

Students who are affected by extenuating circumstances before an examination to such an extent that their performance is likely to be significantly affected might wish to consider postponing the sitting of the examination until a future date.  In this case, students should submit a request for deferral of that examination to their College.

A claim for a deferral on the basis of extenuating circumstances relating to an absence from an examination or an illness during an examination must be submitted to the Home College either in advance of the examination date; or, within 5 WORKING DAYS of the examination taking place.  Any such claim must be in writing using the prescribed form and accompanied by supporting documentary evidence.  It is the responsibility of the student to obtain and submit supporting evidence.

A student who is taken ill during an examination MUST inform the Chief Invigilator either during, or immediately after the examination and BEFORE leaving the examination venue.  Any claim of extenuating circumstances based on an illness during the examination must also be submitted to the Home College within 5 WORKING DAYS of the affected examination taking place.

We’re looking for students to be involved in an exciting new project helping to improve the student experience at Swansea University.  We want you to help shape the University’s future by inviting you to attend a ‘Go Beyond’ workshop event and giving us your ideas.

Our project, Go Beyond, will be looking at five key areas –

  • Learning Delivery, including a review of the Academic Year (when lectures, exams, graduation, and more, are held), and exploring possibilities within Educational Technology.
  • Student Professional Development, including working with the Swansea Employability Academy in embedding additional qualifications into your degree, helping to equip you with sought-after employability skills, and making sure that you have the necessary contacts with potential employers when it’s time to graduate.
  • Student Mobility, including working to provide more opportunities for years and semesters abroad and/or in industry.
  • Programme Development, including looking at any gaps in what the University currently offers and supporting our academics in exploring potential new programmes.
  • Assessment and Feedback, including reviewing the current arrangements and possibly introducing new and innovative ways of assessing you, our students, to ensure that you are getting the most out of your assignments and feedback.

The Go Beyond team are holding a Workshop on Monday 12 September 2016 from 10.30am to 2.00pm (venue TBC), and we would love for students to attend.  A free lunch will be provided!

At the Workshop, you will have an opportunity to have input into the direction of three of the above areas – Learning Delivery, Student Professional Development, and Student Mobility. Along with University staff, you will be put into a creative space to discuss what you’d like to see Swansea University develop in  these key areas.

This is your chance to have your voice heard as the University makes key improvements, so don’t miss out! Let the project team know that you’d like to attend by emailing gobeyond@swansea.ac.uk, and we’ll get back to you with more information as soon as possible. Alternatively if you have any questions at all, don’t be shy – drop us an email!

We look forward to seeing you there.
