While our students don’t tend to be assessed on their style or their lip-syncing skills, many modern reality shows are really crash courses in personal and professional development. Programmes like Drag Race, Masterchef and The Great Pottery Throw Down test students via an endlessly creative series of tasks. These formats have real-world applications for managing learning at universities.
Ru Paul’s Drag Race, for one, certainly raises significant questions about widening participation and pushing the boundaries of Higher Education. Are traditional degree programmes encouraging our students to embrace their own passions and creativity? Are we just offering them a formula to follow, or a chance to truly flourish?
